government
has promised to prosecute honor crimes as murders in
the new millennium. More than legislation, women need
practical help, such as shelters, legal, and financial
help, and the building of burns centers in Pakistan’s
hospitals.
But while it’s easy to donate
money to these worthy causes, you can also do a bit
of activism in your own home. Start with your own family
members, and ask them if they are aware of this issue
– the more people who are thinking and talking
about honor killings will keep interest alive and hopefully
motivate people from all strata of life to try and fight
it. Then talk to your servants and other people who
work in your home, most particularly the women. Chances
are they will tell you tales that show they are unfortunately
more than familiar with violence against women.
You may not be able to step into
their homes and stop every injustice against women and
girls, but let them know that you are aware of these
problems, that you find them unacceptable, and that
there is nothing in Islam to justify this kind of treatment.
You might find yourself in the position to financially
or legally help the victim of these crimes directly,
and just to let them know that you are not blind to
their plight is a great support and help in itself.
With your greater education and resources, you can at
least help them with answers, suggestions, and options
that they can never even dream of.
