Many people
are so terrified of lizards that they have developed
a phobia of them. On seeing a lizard they become so
upset that they cannot be in the same room as the
lizard. Both men and women are equally stricken with
fear and horror of lizards, but for different reasons.
Women hate lizards because they are creepy and ugly.
Men hate lizards because they are forced by their
screaming wives to turn into hunters of the Serengeti
and kill the lizard at any cost. The agility and movement
it takes to kill a lizard is enough to make Rudolf
Nuryev seethe with jealousy, but as very few men ever
wanted to be ballet dancers, this is not an advantage
to killing lizards in the eyes of the average Pakistani
man.
Despite our strong cultural conditioning,
I believe we should outgrow our fear of lizards and
make friends with the little creatures. No matter
how many of them we kill, there are always going to
be more, so we need to rethink our approach to them.
Perhaps you may not be ready to replace your family
dog or cat with a green gecko, but consider the fact
that you may someday able to train your household
lizards to eat the cockroaches that are hiding in
your drains. Now, there’s some food for thought.
