This was something women were just
expected to put up with, as if it were one of the burdens
of being a woman, like PMS, or domestic violence. But
with the advent of CLI, woman are getting their own
back. I experienced my own form of female telephone
empowerment when I recently had my telephone fitted
with caller ID.
A man called my number several
times, asking on each occasion to speak to "Wahid",
"Henna", and "Samir bhai". Finally,
I grew tired of his shenanigans. "Are you calling
from 638-xxxx? " No...no..." the man stuttered
and mumbled in shock.
I went on sweetly, "you see,
I have CLI and if you call again, I'll give your number
to the police. They'll have you beaten to a pulp. Goodbye
now, have a nice day".
"Sorry, sorry," he sputtered,
but I had already hung up on him. I would have loved
to say, "Parting is such sweet sorrow", but
unfortunately, I don't know how to say that in Urdu.
