If you are too
miserly to purchase your own workout video, you can
catch fitness programs on television instead. Indus
Vision airs a yoga show twice a day which is very well
produced; the yoga instructor leads a class of four
people in a scenic Karachi park, and if you don’t
follow the class, you’ll at least feel relaxed
watching them exercise while you lie in bed and eat
chocolates. However, the danger is that if you do follow
the class but do the exercises incorrectly, you’ll
again end up in the hospital for severe sprains and
muscle injuries. If, on the other hand, yoga is too
low-key for you, there’s a great aerobic show
on ESPN called “Beach Fitness”. In this
show, three women who look like the femme bots from
Austin Powers perform feats of strength and stamina
that would put Arnold Schwarzenegger to shame.
Unfortunately, Pakistan is not
a place that encourages casual sports – there
are no teams that play on weekends or leagues for people
to join through work. But taking up a sport is a wonderful
way to lose some weight and get into shape. The most
popular ones here are tennis and squash, with swimming
coming in second only for those women who don’t
fear the curse of eternal darkness (i.e. a tan). Personally
I would opt for tennis or squash because the racket
will make a handy weapon to beat up people who irritate
you on the way to or from your game. Women who have
a great fear of tanning in the harsh Pakistan sun can
always opt for Islamic dress, both in the tennis court
(track pants) or in the swimming pool (scuba diving
bodysuit); this way you can maintain your beautiful
skin while defeating the morality police at the same
time.
