to tell the difference between my blood and the tomato
juice. Slap on band-aid and soldier on, removing peels
of tomatoes with difficulty due to mangled thumb. Remember
to wash blood off tomatoes.
12.10 pm. Remember to put on apron.
12.30 pm. Begin to boil water for pasta, and pour pasta
into salted boiling water. This part of the operation
is a breeze – I could do it with my eyes closed,
confidence from student cooking days propping me up.
Confidence comes in handy once I start cooking tomato
sauce; said confidence combats my sudden urge to turn
all burners off, run away from the kitchen, and hide
in bedroom painting my nails while servant cleans up
and throws everything away.
12.35 pm. Steel self to continue with tomato sauce.
Servant helping claims to not know anything about cooking
and to prove his point brings chopped celery when asked
to bring chopped parsley. Contain urge to fling celery
at servant’s head.
12.40. Pasta almost ready.
12.41 pm. I try to taste pasta to ensure proper softness
and end up burning my tongue instead. Curious that this
should feel more painful than the one-
